Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT)
Description:
Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) is a type of dialysis used to treat patients with acute kidney injury or chronic kidney disease who are critically ill. Unlike conventional intermittent dialysis, CRRT is performed continuously over 24 hours, which allows for more gradual fluid and solute removal.
Symptoms Indicating Need for CRRT:
Severe fluid overload, Persistent electrolyte imbalances, Accumulation of toxins (e.g., urea, creatinine) in the blood, Severe acidosis or alkalosis, Signs of uremia, such as fatigue, confusion, or nausea.
Treatment:
Dialysis Setup: Involves placing a catheter in a large vein to allow for continuous blood flow to the dialysis machine.
Filtration: Blood is continuously filtered through a membrane to remove excess fluids and waste products.
Replacement Fluids: Fluid and electrolytes are replaced as needed to maintain balance.
Anticoagulation: Medication to prevent blood clotting in the dialysis circuit.
Monitoring: Continuous monitoring of vital signs, blood chemistry, and dialysis efficacy.
